Research Abstract

カンブリア紀の地層は日本に露出しておらず、海外調査に重点をおいて研究を行った。スウェーデン南部のカンブリア紀の地層が露出する地域を調査し、そこから眼の細部まで3次元的に保存された、三葉虫をはじめとした微小(1mm未満)な節足動物化石を発見した。電子顕微鏡を用いた調査の結果、複眼やノープリウス眼様の眼、1つの単眼様の眼など、様々な眼をもった節足動物が古生代の初めのカンブリア紀にはすでに地球上に現れていたことが初めて明らかになった。
