Outline of Research at the Start |

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In fiscal 2021, due to the spread of COVID 19 as in the previous fiscal year, the research activities were limited mainly to publications and presenting the result of excavations. I conducted research on the development of the Neolithic societies from the perspective of funeral practices and burial locations in the western wing of the Fertile Crescent including northern Levant, central/ southeastern Anatolia. The research discussed the funeral practice of skull removal and the factors behind decreasing this practice in the Pottery Neolithic period based on evidence from Tell el-Kerkh in northern Syria. The result was published in 2022 in the "Excavation Reports of Tell el-Kerkh, Northwestern Syria 2: The Neolithic Cemetery at Tell el-Kerkh". Details of research outcomes presented remotely at the 12th ICAANE Symposium in Italy, Bologna in 2021. Another research was conducted partially during the postdoctoral tenure about the shift in burial locations and the decline in building-burial relations during the development of the Neolithic societies. The research was published the following year in Orient Journal in 2022. I participated in the excavation at Jarmo Neolithic site in Iraqi-Kurdistan aiming to obtain a clear picture of the Neolithisation process in the eastern wing of the Fertile Crescent. The result of excavations was presented remotely at an international symposium "Revisiting the Hilly Flanks: the Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic periods in the eastern Fertile Crescent" at Copenhagen University, Denmark in 2021.
