Outline of Research at the Start

This research project on the role of organized peasants and activists in improving rural governance and deepening democracy in Indonesia aims to produce a book draft ready to be submitted to a university publisher in mid-2020 and other related activities such as additional fieldwork, public dissemination of the research result, and organizing relevant conference panels in Japan and abroad.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the fiscal year of 2019, I organized a conference panel at the Southeast Asian Studies in Asia (SEASIA) conference in Taiwan in December 2019, conducted a brief field research in Indonesia. For my fieldwork, I visited Jakarta and Bantaeng to interview some key interlocutors and observe some activities, such as community meetings. Findings from this fieldwork allow me to finish the gathering of the empirical materials for my book project. More specifically, these findings are particularly useful for chapter six in my book project. Moreover, parts of these findings can be used for some other articles in the future, especially on the politics of water resources in Indonesia.
A bulk of my activities in the fiscal year of 2020 centered around the completion and publication of several research projects, including my main research on agrarian politics in Indonesia, and I cannot go to Indonesia because of the pandemic and asked a NGO activist to conduct a research report documenting the electoral performance of peasant unions and agrarian movements across Indonesia. A major highlight in this academic year is the completion of my book manuscript and the invitation to revise and resubmit it to the University of Wisconsin Press.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Even though I didn't conduct a fieldwork for the whole year of 2020 because of the COVID19 pandemic, I asked an NGO activist to collect the data on the agrarian politics in Indonesia and wrote some articles. And finally I submitted the book manuscript to the Wisconsin university press and received the comments.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I will revise my book manuscript and soon resubmit it to the Wisconsin University press while keep collecting the data on agrarian politics with the help of NGO activists in Indonesia and keep writing papers and giving presentations in the online conferences.
