Outline of Research at the Start |
Rationale: Mountains provide numerous ecosystem services, which are threatened by anthropogenic and naturally driven landscape changes. To sustain nature’s benefits, a balance must strike between use and replenishment, which is currently non-existent. Methodology: (i) Desk review; (ii) Standardised expert interview mechanism to elicit stakeholder perceptions; (iii) GIS based land use change analysis; and (iv) Research visits to SEPL sites in Japan and India. Expected deliverables: Development of SEPL conservation framework; Composite vulnerability index; policy and research papers.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To meet the objectives of this research under COVID-related restrictions, the methodology was shifted to GIS-based analysis to supplement earlier field visits. The collected field data from the farmers in Nov 2019 was validated using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) during a 15-year period from 2004 to 2018, for seven apple-growing locations in the Kinnaur district of Himalayas. This was done in collaboration with National Remote Sensing Centre (India) and a research hire. The paper originating from this research is published in MDPI Agriculture. During this year, I also worked on finalizing and revising my research articles and books for final publication. I worked on a documentary on “Role of Indigenous and local communities in ecosystem restoration” available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuPpZEK6S7g&t=505s Two research papers, two edited books, four book chapters, and one policy brief published. Participated in the JSPS Science Dialogue Programme.
