Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、2019年にデータ取得を開始した電子陽電子散乱実験Belle IIで取得されたτレプトン事象のデータを用いて素粒子標準模型では禁止されていて、未発見の過程τ-Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV), τ-CP Violation (CPV)を探索し、世界最高精度で荷電レプトンフレーバの構造を明らかにすることを目的とする。荷電レプトンは電子に似た性質を持つ粒子の総称で、τレプトンはその１つである。τ-LFVの研究は、荷電レプトン混合の情報を、τ-CPVの研究は、荷電レプトンCP非保存相の情報を与えてくれる。このような情報を基に物質を構成する粒子の起源に迫っていく。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

前年度に引き続きBelle II実験のデータ解析の準備としてBelle II実験で取得されたデータの理解を深めるための研究を行った。２光子過程とBhaBha過程、dimuon過程を比較することでレプトン識別効率の系統誤差の評価を行い、より信頼できる評価結果を与えることに成功した。残念ながら計画当初の予定通りのデータ収集は達成できなかったが、少ない統計量でも成果が出せる解析を検討し、Belle II検出器の優位性を十分発揮できるタウレプトン質量測定に取り組み、世界最高精度での測定に成功した。また、レプトンフレーバ保存則を破る新しい粒子の探索を行い約30年ぶりに探索結果を更新した。さらに、ベクトル粒子と軽いレプトンへのレプトンフレーバ保存則を破る崩壊過程においては新しい解析方法を導入し、背景事象の量を先行研究と同等に抑えつつ、先行研究の約2倍の信号検出効率を達成する解析を行うことができた。これらの成果については分野を代表する国際会議の１つであるRencontres de Moriond で公表された。
また、分野を代表する国際会議の１つである 41st International Conference on High Energy physics (ICHEP2022) で当計画研究で雇用した特任助教が今までの成果についての発表を行った。同特任助教は当計画研究で行った粒子識別の性能評価の結果について、粒子識別装置に特化した国際会議11th International Workshop on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detectors (RICH2022)でも講演を行っている。

Reason

Belle II実験のデータ収集については現在データ収集は停止中で順調とは言い難い状況ではあるが、着実にデータの理解を進め系統誤差の評価を推し進めてきた。特にレプトンの系統誤差の評価方法は確立したと言って過言ではない。その成果としてBelle II実験の現時点まで収集されたデータによる、世界最高精度でのタウレプトン質量測定結果や、レプトンフレーバ保存則を破る新しい粒子の探索結果、ベクトル粒子と軽いレプトンへのレプトンフレーバ保存則を破る崩壊過程などを国際会議で発表した。これらの結果については論文投稿準備中である。さらに、K/π識別、π0再構成効率の評価を詰めつつある。
また並行して、レプトンフレーバ保存則を破る過程の探索についてはBelle II実験で行われた上記の解析と同様の解析をBelle実験のデータを用いて進めている。加えてタウレプトン崩壊におけるCPの破れの探索のためのデータ解析も進めている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今年度は最終年度であるため、これまでの成果を論文としてまとめていく。また、Belle II実験のデータで有効であった解析方法を生かすことが可能なBelle実験のデータを使った解析を検討し進めて行く。現状Belle実験のデータ量の半分程度のデータ量しか蓄積されていないが、これまでの研究成果により、機械学習などの導入によりBelle実験と同程度の感度の新物理探索ができることがわかってきたので、高効率な解析が可能な解析対象を検討し、Belle II実験のデータ解析を進めて行く。また、そのために必要な粒子同定や再構成に関する系統誤差の評価も進めて行く。
