Outline of Research at the Start

真空は、まるで何らかの物質のように環境や理論パラメータに応じて性質を劇的に変化させる。特に興味深いのが真空の「角度」パラメータθへの応答である。θは理論のトポロジカルな性質を通じて物理に現れ、CP対称性の破れ、カラー閉じ込め、アクシオン暗黒物質、インフレーション、トポロジカル絶縁体など、様々な物理現象に登場する。しかしながら、長い研究の歴史を経てもなお、ゲージ理論のθ依存性の全貌は相構造を含め未だ明らかになっていない。本研究では、近年発展している数理的手法と格子ゲージ理論に基づく数値的な手法を融合し、ゲージ理論のトポロジーに関する理解を深め、素粒子現象論・宇宙論における重大問題の解決を図る。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

ゲージ理論には様々なトポロジカルな「物体」が存在する。それらは素粒子の性質に影響を及ぼすことが知られているが、その全容は謎に包まれたままである。本研究では、トポロジーを制御するパラメータであるθ項の影響を数値的に探る研究を継続的に行っている。2022年度は、θ項と温度の2次元パラメータ空間上で相構造を探る研究を行った。空間を格子に切りゲージ理論を定義する、格子ゲージ理論の数値的シミュレーションでは、確率を複素方向に広げてしまうθ項の取り扱いに困難が生じる。そこで、時空の一部の領域だけにθ項を導入して、その部分体積への応答を見る方法を考案し、興味深い結果が得られている。
また、電磁気学におけるトポロジカルな配位である、磁気モノポールについての研究も行った。磁気モノポール存在下では、θ項の影響により電荷やフェルミオン数が発生することが知られている。この発生メカニズムについて研究した。質量のないフェルミオンはθ項の影響を打ち消すことが知られているが、θ項を時間の関数として動かした場合はなにが起こるのか。このシステムを2次元の理論に還元することによって解き、フェルミオンの発生メカニズムやその宇宙論への応用について研究を行った。
我々の研究では異なるθ項をもつ領域の間のドメインウォールを考えるが、そこに現れると期待されるのがトポロジカルな場の理論の代表例であるチャーン=サイモンズ理論である。この理論は古くからその境界理論にWZW模型と呼ばれるエッジモードを持つことが知られておりホログラフィーの例ともみなせるが、近年この理論についてヤン=ミルズ項を加えた模型のアンサンブル平均を考えることで粗視化したホログラフィーが考えられてきた。このホログラフィーをチャーン=サイモンズ項が一般の値を持つ場合に拡張し、さらにその対称性のゲージ化を考えるなどして拡張する研究を進めた。

Reason

ゲージ理論のθ項への対応を数値的に探る研究については、研究期間の早いうちに方法論が提案され、興味深い結果が得られている。現在、この時空の一部分にθ項を導入する方法を応用し、有限温度系の相転移とθ項の関係についての研究が進んでいる。また、これまで、ゲージ理論のトポロジカルな性質についての理論的研究においても重要な結果を得ることに成功している。特に、QCDにおけるη’中間子の有効理論がQCDのトポロジカルな性質を通じて大きな広がりを見せることを突き止めた。また、モノポール背景下のダイナミクスについても重要な結果を得ている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後も、数値的研究と数理的研究の両方から、ゲージ理論の謎に迫る研究を継続する。数値的研究では、SU(2)ゲージ理論とSU(3)ゲージ理論の有限温度における非閉じ込め相転移がθ項の影響によってどのような変更を受けるか、格子ゲージ理論の数値的にシミュレーションを行う。特に、SU(2)ゲージ理論においては、θ項によって閉じ込めが起こらない可能性が否定されていないが、我々の結果は閉じ込めが継続することを示唆する。この結果をより詳細に検討し、ゲージ理論の真空構造を探る。また、現実のQCDにおいてη’中間子はθ項と深い関係にある。η’の物理は謎めいていて、様々な憶測があるが、モノポール背景下での物理の整合性などを考慮することにより、新しい知見が得られている。この研究を継続し、QCDの有限温度での振る舞いについて新しい結果を得ることを目指す。また、トポロジーを記述する場の理論のチャーン=サイモンズ理論のヤン=ミルズ項による変形やそのアンサンブル平均についても世界で最も一般的な設定でのホログラフィーでの記述を目指す。
