Outline of Research at the Start

火山噴火における，マグマ破砕のように，物質の流動から固体的な破壊への遷移は，固体地球現象のモデリングにおいて重要かつ未解明の現象である．本研究は，物質の流動や弾性変形を観察しやすい軟らかい材料（ソフトマター）を用いた実験により，この遷移現象を解明する．そして，それを再現する数値計算手法を開発することを通し，地球科学に応用するための基盤を構築する．

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

爆発的な火山噴火では、液体・気泡・結晶からなるマグマなどの複雑流体が急速な変形を受けて破砕し、火山灰などが形成される。この現象を、流体の流動と破壊過程と位置づけ、その物理を解明することを目的としている。

マクスウェル型の粘弾性流体と降伏応力とシェアーシニング特性を持つビンガム型流体に対し，レオロジーの比較を行った．回転式レオメーターにおいて，試料を載せる下側のプレートを透明ガラスにし，変形中の流体の流動や破壊を可視化する装置を新たに開発した．そして，歪み速度と歪み加速度依存性を調べた．研究成果をアメリカ地球物理学会において発表した．粘弾性流体の円柱移動に伴う流動と破壊を調べる実験においては，論文を投稿し，査読者から受けた指摘を確認するため，パラメータを増やした追加実験を実施した．一連の実験を修了し，アメリカ地球物理学会において発表し，論文の修正を進めた．数値計算グループは，マクスウェル粘弾性流体の伸長破壊過程を調べた先行研究の実験結果を再現する計算を行った．実験で用いられている流体の非線形粘弾性をよく表すFENE-PMモデル実装し，伸長と共に応力が急増する挙動や，き裂の進展の時間スケールを再現することに成功した．

本プロジェクトで実施した研究を総括すると，爆発的火山噴火における流体の破壊について，新しい知見が得られた．また，本プロジェクトの一部として，Kavli 理論物理学研究所主催の研究会「Multiphase Flows in Geophysics and the Environment」に参加し，本研究の成果を紹介するとともに，世界を代表する専門家と議論した．そこから，爆発的噴火における固気混相流のダイナミクスに関する国際共同研究へと発展し，論文を発表した．
