Outline of Research at the Start

地震波速度異方性の存在から、固体金属でできた地球の内核で大規模な流動変形が起こっていることが示唆されているが、内核での流動変形の実態は内核物質の物性の理解が不十分なためよくわかっていない。本研究では、変形実験によって内核構成物質であるhcp鉄のレオロジーを明らかにし、変形実験と並行してhcp鉄中の元素拡散のカイネティクスをアニール実験によって明らかにする。これらを組み合わせて、hcp鉄のレオロジーをそのミクロな素過程から総合的に解明し、内核での物質流動の正確な評価を確立する。hcp鉄のレオロジーから見積もられる内核の粘性率から、内核の異方的構造を生み出しているメカニズムの特定を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

地震波速度異方性の存在から、固体金属でできた地球の内核で大規模な流動変形が起こっていることが示唆されているが、内核での流動変形の実態は内核物質の物性の理解が不十分なためよくわかっていない。本研究では、内核の主要構成物質であるhcp鉄とその関連物質の変形実験と元素拡散実験によりhcp鉄のレオロジーをミクロな素過程から総合的に解明し、内核の異方的構造のメカニズムに迫ることを目指している。2019-2020年度には、高エネルギー加速器研究機構に設置されているD111型高圧変形実験装置および高輝度光科学研究センター(SPring-8)に設置されているD-DIA装置を用いた高温高圧変形その場観察実験を行ない、hcp鉄とその低圧相であるbcc鉄の流動則を定量的に明らかにし、2021年度は、本科研費によりSPring-8に導入されたD111型高圧変形装置を用いた実験方法の運用を軌道に乗せた。2022年度は、hcp鉄のレオロジーへの水素の影響に関する実験を進め、dhcp構造の水素化鉄 (dhcp-FeHx) の流動則に関する予察的結果を得た。dhcp-FeHxはhcp鉄よりも軟らかいもののその応力値は同一条件下で0.5-0.8倍程度であり、その差は小さいことが示唆される。いっぽうで、元素拡散実験では、鉄と鉄ニッケル合金のペアを試料として用いた高温高圧実験を40 GPaで試みたが得られた拡散係数は異常に高く、これは用いた出発物質の状態に由来する可能性がある。

Reason

当初の計画どおり、すでにhcp鉄の高温高圧変形実験が順調に進み23 GPaまでの流動則が決定され、元素拡散実験では鉄と鉄ニッケル合金のペアを試料として用いた高温高圧実験も進んでいる。また当初の計画以上の進展として、bcc鉄の流動則が高温高圧変形実験により決定されたことと、水素化鉄の流動則に関する予察的結果が得られたことが挙げられる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2023年度には、SPring-8のD111型高圧変形装置を用いた実験により、hcp鉄のレオロジーへの水素の影響を明らかにするための実験に取り組む。この実験では、高い水素量を持つdhcp構造の水素化鉄 (FeHx) とより低い水素量を持つhcp構造の水素化鉄についてレオロジーを調べ、水素の影響を系統的に明らかにする。また同時に、fcc相およびhcp相における鉄-ニッケル相互拡散実験を最高50 GPaまでの高圧下で行う。拡散実験では特に、これまで実験的に明らかにされていなかったhcp相の拡散係数の測定に焦点を当てて研究を行う。
