平安時代、文化・国制を問わず、さまざまな領域にみられた「国風」的文化現象とは、いったい何であったか。具体的には、「国風」的とみえるものに通底している本質・構造・成立過程・変容過程はいかなるものであったか。また、交易が活発化する当時の東アジア世界のなかで、なぜそのような現象が日本列島で起こりえたのか。こうした問題について、日本史学・国文学・美術史・対外関係史・中国史・朝鮮史の研究者が結集して明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project, specialists in multiple disciplines, including Japanese history, Japanese literature, comparative literature, art history, architectural history, Buddhism history, and Korean history, collaborated closely to examine unique aspects of the cultural phenomenon known as the 'Kokufu Bunka' flourished from the tenth to twelfth centuries in Japan. By putting the phenomenon within the broad context of East Asian history, they concluded that the so-called "Japanese national culture" was a combination of "The Tang style culture that had already been lost or no longer popular in China" and "The culture that had been existing in Japan". The project, at the same time, clarified that the "Japanese national culture" was to some extent influenced by the "fragments of contemporaneous Chinese culture" as well as by the "imported Chinese goods (KARAMONO) of the time".

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
世界中でナショナリズム的思潮が広がっている現在、「自国文化」と考えられているものの歴史的性格を、冷静かつ十分に明らかにしておくことが求められる。本研究の結果、９世紀末以降に日本列島上で「国風文化」（「日本的」な文化）が現れたとき、それは決して「混じりっけのない純粋な日本の文化」ではなく、また同様に、「中国文化の枠組みをそのままに表面だけを日本的に変えただけのもの」でもなかったことが判明し、そこから、圧倒的な影響力をもっていた中国の周辺地域の一つである日本において、どのようにして様々な国際的要素が入り交じった独自の文化が生まれたのかを明らかにすることができた。
