| Outline of Research at the Start |
岡山県倉敷市児島の野﨑家は、近世～近代の日本を代表する巨大塩田地主である。同家は、近世後期以降、全国の塩の8割以上を生産する瀬戸内塩業者の中心的存在となり、多様な政治・経済・社会活動を展開した。その活動は、岡山から瀬戸内海、日本から東アジアにまで及ぶ。本研究は、全面的な利用が可能となった野﨑家塩業歴史館所蔵の野﨑家史料について、その目録化を図り全容を公開し、「野﨑家史料研究会」を立ち上げて学際的研究を実施するとともに、それらの成果の上に立って論文集を刊行する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The Nozaki family of Kojima,Kurashiki City,is one of Japan's leading salt farm landowners.The objectives of this research are to (1)catalog the archives hold by the Nozaki Family Museum of Salt Industry,(2)conduct interdiciplinary research based on these archives,and(3)publish the results in a collectuon of papers.
The results of this study are as follows.(1)The Nozaki family archives were cataloged for 20,616 items,of which 4864 photographed.(2)The Nozaki Family Archives Study Group was established to clarify how the Nozaki family,which began as influential figures in the Okayama and Setouchi regions,played a role in Japan's modernization and responded to imperialism.(3)The Principal Investigator,Research Assistants,and young researchers interested in the archives of the Nozaki family agreed to publish a collection of papers.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
倉敷市児島の野﨑家は日本を代表する塩田地主である。本研究は、野﨑家塩業歴史館が所蔵する文書史料を対象として、19世紀に入り塩田地主としての姿を現す野﨑家が、①武左衛門・武吉郎の下で塩田地主として急速に経営を拡大し、②近世においては岡山藩政、明治維新後は岡山県政と結びつきつつ地方行政・地方政治に影響力を行使し、③帝国議会開設に際し貴族院多額納税者議員として国政に与るようになり、④対外硬派に加わり近衛篤麿の政治的・資金的な後ろ盾となり、⑤日清戦争後には児玉源太郎台湾総督・後藤新平民政長官と協調しつつ台湾野﨑塩行を創立するなど、日本の近代化を担い帝国化にも積極的に対応していく経緯を明らかにした。
