本研究では、日本の民俗学では十分に取り組まれてこなかった重要な研究ジャンルである芸術＝アートを研究対象とする。具体的には、芸術の専門教育を受けておらず、そして自分のことを「芸術家」だと認識していない「芸術家」たちによって制作されるアート、すなわち市井のどこにでもいる、表舞台で脚光を浴びない普通の人びとの、ありきたりな日常生活における創作である「ヴァナキュラー・アート」を題材に、民俗学的アート論の方法や理論を検討することによって、日本の民俗学に欠如しているアート研究の視座を構築する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Vernacular art is a genre of art and outdoor constructions made by untrained “artists” who do not recognize themselves as artists. In this study, we took the pioneering step of introducing the research approach known as vernacular art, whose presence in the study of folklore and art overseas has grown substantially in recent years, into Japan and explored the possibility of developing research methods and practices associated with this approach in Japan. The conclusion reached is that vernacular art has the potential to become a powerful driving force in changing how Folklore is studied in Japan.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、これまで日本で着目されておらず、その重要性が十分に理解されてこなかったヴァナキュラー・アートという新しい民俗研究のジャンル、および研究視角を先駆的に日本の民俗学に導入し、その方法や研究例の具体像を明らかにし、その応用可能性を明らかにした点で学術的な意義がある。また、普通の生活世界で生きる非専門的な多様な人びと＝「野の芸術家」たちが展開するアートであるヴァナキュラー・アートの多元的な価値を尊重し、それに内在する人びとの思い、生き様、そして創造性に主たる眼目を置いて、アート論を狭いアート・ワールドから広く社会に開放した点で社会的意義がある。
