Outline of Research at the Start |
We examine China’s labor market structure, focusing on how the labor-market reforms affect Chinese trade and FDI. We aim to build a framework that can incorporate the hukou system, the partial loosening of hukou control, and its impacts on rural-urban migration, their interplay with the surge of Chinese manufacturing, inward FDI and exports.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2022, because COVID19 had severe influence in China, it was still locked down from foreigners, so we could not travel to China to conduct field research and interview the migrant workers. Instead, we did more research on the existing literature. We also started to build our theoretical framework.
We hope that next year, we would be able to conduct field research and interview some migrant workers in both Northeast China and in Guangdong province. We also hope to do a series of analyses based on the data we plan to collect, both theoretically and empirically.
In addition, the project leader travelled to the Boston in the U.S., to conduct joint research with scholars at MIT and Boston University, and to apply the data on China related to this project, on the real estate boom from 2005 to 2015. In particular, we are investigating how hukou reform and labor migration are related to the recent real estate boom in China.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have finished the literature review, and started building the theoretical framework.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We hope that in 2023, we shall be able to follow the original plan and do some interviews & field research and collect data. Based on the data we collect, we shall conduct detailed analysis, both theoretical and empirical.
