本研究は、専門教育主体の学士課程において、専門教育との共存が容易ではないと言われてきた教養教育を、どのように共存させ機能させているか、カリキュラム・マネジメントという視点から、1.教育理念、2.教育内容・方法、3.教員組織、4.高校や労働市場との接続、5.維持費用の5つの視点を設定し、これらの構造的関係に着目しつつ、各種の文献資料、大学団体や大学関係者へのインタビューなどをもとに、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、日本を対象として分析し、3地域における共通性や差異を明らかにすることを目的とする。
これはまた、困難を抱え続けてきた日本の教養教育の、今後の在り方に示唆を得ることをもう1つの目的としている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Since the mid-2000s, we have conducted on-site surveys to clarify the new trend of introducing liberal arts at universities in Western Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. As a result, it has become clear that the main purpose of the introduction of liberal arts is to respond to the fluid labor market, and that new departments and colleges are being established to meet the demand for a broad range of liberal arts studies in order to produce talented people for the labor market.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来の研究においては、西欧の近代大学は、中世大学における幅広く学ぶリベラル・アーツを後期中等教育に降ろし、大学は専門教育のみの機関となったとされてきた。しかしながら、2000年代半ばからの、西欧大学におけるリベラル・アーツの復権は、常識を覆す動向であるものの、日本ではほぼ注目されてこなかった。それが何を理由とするものなのか、そしてどのように機能しているかに関して明らかにしたことに、本研究の意義がある。
