Outline of Research at the Start

原生代末期から古生代最初期のカンブリア紀にかけ、大規模な氷期イベントの終了後、多細胞動物の出現と急速な進化が行われた。しかし地質・古生物記録の乏しさから、その実態に関してはほとんどが未解明である。当研究では、モンゴル西部地域の連続するエディアカラ系～下部カンブリア系連続層序などをターゲットに、氷期からカンブリア紀前期に至る生物進化事変を実証的に明らかにすることを目標とする。特に動物体の行動の化石である生痕化石、小型有殻化石、堆積岩の化学分析に基づく環境復元に焦点を当て、多細胞動物（特に左右相称動物）の初期進化の実態の解明と、より確実なデータに基づく当時の生態系の復元を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

原生代最後期からカンブリア紀にかけての多細胞動物の爆発的多様化とその原因、そしてそれに付随する化石の保存や多様化に関する問題を探るため、モンゴル、モロッコや国内のフィールド調査を行った。さらに国内のカンブリア系の化石標本調査を行い、その多様化に関する新知見を得ることができた。当初当研究は海外調査を中心に考えていたが、新型コロナの拡大に伴いその方針を一部変更し、多様な方向からカンブリア紀の多様化に迫る研究を行った。
１．モンゴルのエディアカラ系・カンブリア系と産出化石の研究を行い、ザブハン地域、ゴビ・アルタイ地域の上部エディアカラ系と下部カンブリア系から産出した藻類Chinggiskhaania bifurcataがモンゴル西部に広域に分布しかつ時代をまたいだ産出をすることを確認した。中国のエディアカラ系藻類化石と比べて多様度が極端に低い特色がみられる点を明らかにした。
２．茨城県日立市のカンブリア系に付随する石灰岩の層序と古生物の研究を行った。石灰岩中からウミユリCyclocion属を確認し、含まれる砕屑性ジルコンの年代と合わせてこの石灰岩が石炭系であることが明らかになった。
３．例外的な保存を示す愛知県南知多町に分布する師崎層群からの古生物の化石化過程に関する研究から急速な堆積と埋没、還元的環境下で鉄分が黄鉄鉱結晶として沈澱、その後酸化環境で変化することが明らかになった。この研究はカンブリア系によく見られる例外的な保存のメカニズムを解明することに応用できる可能性がある。
４．北海道三笠市に分布する白亜紀中期の地層中に含まれる二枚貝２種を用い、その成長線と酸素同位体比から水温の推定と二枚貝の成長を追跡することに成功した。この研究は海洋環境が生物の成長や進化にどう関係するかに関する基本的なデータを与えてくれる。
