Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では放射線を検出する素子として、がん治療や高エネルギー物理学・天文学実験に使われる、シンチレータという機能性材料(発光材料)について、新物質開発とその発光機構の解明に取り組む。とくに赤色で発光するシンチレータの開発はフロンティア領域であり、また、多くの応用が期待されている。

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have developed novel scintillation materials, which is one of the phosphor groups excited by radiation. Basically, scintillators have UV or blue emission bands, while we focus on red or infrared emitting materials. We succeeded in growing novel materials with such emission bands and high light outputs, and discussed the emission mechanism.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
赤色・近赤外発光シンチレータは、既存のシンチレータよりも原理的に発光量やエネルギー分解能が良くなるため、より高感度な放射線計測を行えると期待できる。この効果を活かせば、放射線を使った非破壊検査で、より少ない量の放射線でも検査ができる。加えて、廃炉事業に関連して、チェレンコフ発光などの青色などの短波長領域で顕著なノイズなどと区別して信号を取り出せるため、非常に高い線量率の条件でも感度の良い放射線計測ができるなど、その社会的意義は大きい。加えてこれまでの青色シンチレータなどとは発光機構と異なる発光機構であり、その機構解明などは学術的にも意義深い。
