Outline of Research at the Start

竹林の炭素固定量はどれくらいなのか?、それは将来の温暖化に伴ってどれくらい変化しうるのかという疑問に答えることを目標として、1)竹林における炭素吸収量および放出量の年々変動の測定と変動要因の解明、2)竹林の炭素吸収量および放出量の変動特性を再現する炭素固定量算定モデルの構築、を行う。また、3)そのモデルと広域メッシュ化情報を利用し、広域の竹林の炭素固定量の算定と将来予測を行う。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Although people regard Moso bamboo forests as significant carbon sink for mitigate climate changes, still few studies are available for quantifying carbon sequestration ability in Moso bamboo forests. Our study aimed to clarify Moso bamboo carbon cycling including above and belowground processes and main factors determining the components of the carbon cycling based on some-year field observation conducted in several sites covering Taiwan, Fukuoka, and Kyoto sites. As well, we developed simple and mathematical models reproducing carbon cycling in Moso bamboo forests, which are available for quantifying Moso bamboo carbon fixation ability and possible changes in response to climate changes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、これまで明らかでなかったモウソウチク林全体(地上部と地下部)の炭素吸収機能を定量評価した点に学術的意義がある。また、炭素循環の各コンポーネントの環境特性も明らかにし、いくつかのモデルを構築した。将来の温暖化に対する変化予測の基礎情報となる点にも学術的意義がある。
また、本研究ではモウソウチク林はそのバイオマス量の少なさに比して、高い炭素固定機能を持つことを定量的に示し、気候変動緩和策を講じるうえで有効な手段となることを示した点に社会的意義がある。
