Outline of Research at the Start

針葉樹は、進化史的には広葉樹よりも原始的であり、広葉樹に競争排除されてきた歴史をもつ。現在の針葉樹の自然分布は局所的であるが、熱帯から亜寒帯まで幅広い。どうして、針葉樹は広葉樹に追われつつも、幅広い温度環境で生き残ったのだろうか？本研究は、西太平洋地湿潤地域（日本・台湾・ボルネオ・ニュージーランド）において、森林生態系を「植生－土壌系」として気候・土壌と関連づけて分析し、「気候・土壌条件が地上部の光競争を介して針葉樹の優占度を決定する」という仮説を検証することを目的とする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、森林生態系を「植生－土壌系」として気候・土壌と関連づけて分析し、「気候・土壌条件が地上部の光競争を介して針葉樹の優占度を決定する」という仮説の検証を目的とする。
本研究ではマレーシア・ブルネイ・台湾・ニュージーランドの針広混交林で野外調査を行う予定だったが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行のため断念せざるをえなかった。そこで、日本国内に的を絞って、屋久島の亜熱帯～暖温帯の照葉樹林と針広混交林、北海道の苫小牧・別海町の冷温帯～亜寒帯の針広混交林と湿地林において野外調査（毎木調査・光環境計測・樹形計測）を実施した。これらの調査区に設置した小型の温度ロガーから気温データを回収し、新規調査地には新たに設置した。また、湿潤地域だけでなく乾燥地帯にも着目し、モンゴルにおいて針葉樹が優占する森林ステップ地帯の広葉樹林で野外調査を実施した。
北海道、幌別山のブナ北限域の針広混交林に2006年に設定された調査区において、2021年に樹木直径を再測定して15年間の成長・死亡データを解析した結果を日本生態学会英文誌に投稿し受理された。また、ボルネオのキナバル山の標高に沿った繁殖器官生産の季節性についての共著論文、キナバル山と屋久島の植物種の標高分布パターンを他の熱帯温帯山岳と比較解析した共著論文、南西諸島の草本を含む植物多様性についての共著論文（データペーパーと原著論文）を発表した。
別海町の湿地林の解析結果については、2023年3月の日本生態学会大会で発表した。

Reason

新型コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行のため、本研究課題申請時に予定していた台湾・ブルネイ・ニュージーランドにおける海外調査は2020～2022年度に実施することができなかった。そこで、湿潤気候の日本国内の多様な気候帯における針葉樹林・針広混交林と照葉樹林や落葉広葉樹林を比較することで当初の研究目的の達成を目指すとともに、乾燥気候のモンゴルの森林も対象に含めることにした。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

日本国内の多様な気候帯における針広混交林・針葉樹林と照葉樹林・落葉広葉樹林を比較する方向で研究を進めていく。新型コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行が改善されているので、コロナ禍により長期観測が中断されたマレーシアで海外調査を実施する。また、モンゴルでの調査についても検討する。次年度は最終年度なので、リサーチアシスタントを雇用し研究の取りまとめも行う。
