Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This study examined landslides caused by the 2018 Eastern Iburi Earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan, and the subsequent changes in terrain and vegetation. The failures occurred along a volcanic tephra layer containing Ta-d pumice, deposited about 9,000 years ago. Groundwater and clay minerals contributed to unusual failure mechanisms. Using LiDAR and UAV photogrammetry, we quantified sediment movement and topographic change across affected slopes. Remote sensing revealed patterns of erosion, transport, and deposition with high precision. We also monitored vegetation recovery and analyzed factors affecting recovery. Areas with rich legacys showed faster forest recovery, while poor legacy sites required more time and support. The findings informed field assessments after the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, demonstrating their practical value. This integrated research approach contributes to more precise landslide predection and offers insights for forest restoration in mountainous regions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
