Outline of Research at the Start

植物の中には,自家不和合性をもち他家受精しか行わない種がいる一方で,自家不和合性をもたずに自家受精を行う植物もまた多く存在します.自家受精は,生存力の弱い子孫が生まれるという不利な点がある一方で,1個体でも子供を残せるなど有利な点もあり,植物の中で繰り返し進化してきました.自家受精する植物には,花弁が小さい,花粉の数が少ないなど典型的な花の特徴がいくつもみられます.私達は,進化の過程でどのような遺伝的な変革により自家受精をする植物が進化してきたのか,さまざまな花の特徴はどの遺伝子の変化により起きたのかなどを,ペチュニア属植物を用いて解き明かそうとしています.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We performed evolutionary genetic analyses in Petunia (Solanaceae) to understand the evolutionary process of the selfing syndrome, a set of traits typically observed in selfing species. By QTL mapping, we identified numbers of loci responsible for traits involved in the selfing syndrome. We also developed a novel high-throughput method to identify alleles for self-incompatibility, and inferred the evolutionary process of self-compatibility by using the method.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

自家受精する植物には、花が小型化している、花粉数が少ないなどの典型的な性質が多くあり、これらの形質群をまとめて「自殖シンドローム」と呼びます。本研究では、自殖シンドロームがみられるナス科ペチュニア属植物を用いて、その進化の遺伝的背景を明らかにすることを目指しました。自殖シンドロームの原因となる遺伝子座を複数同定することに成功したほか、自殖性に関連する遺伝子を効率よく検出する新手法も確立しました。
