Outline of Research at the Start

気候変動に影響を与えるエアロゾルに、森林火災から大量に発生する固体有機物粒子(ターボール;TB)がある。このTBは、主要エアロゾル種に匹敵する排出量が推定されながら、生成・除去プロセスや光学特性など、気候モデルに組み込むための必要なデータがなく、世界的にTBの気候影響はほとんど分かっていない。本申請では北半球での広域な航空機観測や地上観測で得られる試料の電子顕微鏡分析を通じて、TBの①生成メカニズム、②発生量及び光学特性の定量、③除去過程の解明に取り組む。これらの結果で得られるデータは、気候モデル等に組み込まれることによって、気候変動予測の精度向上に貢献することが期待される。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Tarballs are spherical organic aerosol particles emitted from biomass burning and have an impact on global climate. This study reveals their physical/chemical properties, optical properties, atmospheric abundances, and atmospheric removal processes based on samples collected from direct emission and long-range transport (e.g., Arctic region) and analyses using transmission electron microscopy. These results provide information on the climatic influences of tarballs. Our study has implications for improving climate modeling in the future.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

地球気候の変化により、大規模かつ高頻度の森林火災が生じることが懸念されている。森林火災に伴い様々な物質が大気に放出されるが、その中の一つに有機エアロゾルの一種であるターボールがある。ターボールはこれまでその分析の困難さからその実態が十分に分かっていなかった。本研究課題では、そのターボールに焦点を当てた研究を行い、その実態解明を行った。これらの研究により、ターボールの大気中での振る舞いが明らかとなり、今後の気候研究での重要な要素となることが分かった。
