| Outline of Research at the Start |
プラズマによって誘起された生体活性物質の分子構造と物性を突き止め、各物質と生体との相互作用を解明することによって、超バイオ機能発現の本質を明らかにする。また、活性物質による細胞死、増殖、分化などの真核生物に普遍的な現象の分子機構を解明する。その成果を基盤にして、プラズマ医療、農業という未来産業を拓く羅針盤となる、学術基盤『プラズマ生命科学』を切り拓き、地球規模の課題である、難病治療や食糧不足などを解決するイノベーションを産み出す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
As components of plasma-activated Ringer's lactate solution (PAL), we have newly identified ethyl acetate, glyceric acid, and tricarballylic acid. We found that the combined administration of these three substances selectively kills cancer cells over normal cells. Furthermore, we discovered that selectively irradiating tryptophan with oxygen atoms generates tryptophan radicals with high efficiency. These radicals deactivate enzyme activities such as GAPDH within bacteria, leading to selective bacterial killing. Additionally, we elucidated that PAL induces a type of cell death called ferroptosis in mesothelioma cells and oral squamous epithelial cells. Furthermore, we have initiated a specific clinical study as a first-in-human trial using PAL.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究により、新たなプラズマ誘起活性物質が同定され、またそれらによる生理学的応答の作用機序が解明され、学術的意義は高い。また研究代表者の堀は、2022年11月3日に以下の受賞理由により、内閣府より紫綬褒章を受章した。「低温プラズマ科学の分野において、プラズマの計測方法を確立し、これまで未知であったプラズマプロセス中のラジカルと固体との相互反応機構を定量的に解明し、新しいプラズマの制御方法を世界に先駆け実現した。また、これらの成果により開発した高密度大気圧低温プラズマ装置を医療・農業の分野に展開し、新たな学際領域を開拓するなど、斯学の発展に多大な貢献をした。」
