Outline of Research at the Start

東南アジア島嶼部には熱帯泥炭地が広がり,泥炭林と共存して膨大な量の土壌有機物(泥炭)を蓄積してきた。しかし近年,オイルパーム農園の開発・拡大による森林伐採と乾燥化により,泥炭の好気的分解(CO2排出)が促進されている。本研究では,農園を含む泥炭生態系に分布する観測サイトをネットワーク化し,温室効果気体(GHG)とエネルギーのフラックス(大気-生態系間の交換量),気象・土壌環境などに関するデータベースを構築し,衛星リモートセンシングや生態系モデリング,気候シミュレーションを活用して,熱帯泥炭林のオイルパーム農園への転換が炭素蓄積量および炭素・エネルギー収支に与える影響を解明する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

熱帯泥炭林からオイルパーム農園への転換が土壌炭素貯留機能に与える影響を解明するために,インドネシアの撹乱程度の異なるサイトにおける泥炭の蓄積状況及び14C年代深さ分布を解析した結果,排水後18年間で排水による炭素放出量が7 kg C m-2にのぼること,またその炭素放出は主に300~1000年前に蓄積した泥炭分解によることを明らかにした。また,転換後25年以上のオイルパーム農園に隣接する熱帯泥炭林サイトにおいて泥炭コアを採取し,泥炭の蓄積状況及び14C年代の分析を開始した。さらに,インドネシアの未排水泥炭林の酸性土壌とそれを中和した土壌の培養実験により,中性化によって土壌微生物群集の変化とメタン生成能の増加が示された。
開発した簡易測定法を用いて,マレーシア・パーム油庁の苗畑でオイルパーム苗から放出されるイソプレン放出速度の個体間差を測定し,同一個体間での葉位によるイソプレン放出速度の違いの変動幅を明らかにするとともに,イソプレン放出能の個体間差を明らかにするための評価方法を確立した。
東南アジアの衛星データ(MODIS)を使用して2000~2020年の各年の土地被覆/利用図を作成した。作成した土地被覆/利用図の平均精度は88.58±0.93%であった。また,観測データを用いて呼吸量のモデル式の検証および定式化を行い,生態系モデルの呼吸量の検証・改良を行った結果,土地被覆に応じて異なる呼吸式を適用する必要があることがわかった。
幅広い時間スケールに渡る解析結果を比較することで,ボルネオ島における土地利用改変が地域気候に与える影響を統合的に解釈した。森林伐採による降水量の減少は,もともと降水量の多い雨季やラニーニャ年に顕著で,地域的には乾季が比較的不明瞭な北部で影響が大きい。このことから,森林伐採が時間・空間の両観点から島全体の水循環を不活発化させる効果があることが分かった。

Reason

熱帯泥炭の炭素循環とオイルパーム農園化にともなう温室効果気体放出の変化について,マレーシアの熱帯泥炭地のアブラヤシ農園3サイト,森林1サイトにおいて,CO2・CH4のフラックス観測を環境要因の測定とともに進めた。また地下水や排水路の水を採取し,溶存有機態炭素濃度の測定なども開始している。
インドネシアの撹乱程度の異なる泥炭サイトにおける14C分析を通して,熱帯泥炭林の排水・火災が土壌炭素貯留に及ぼす直接的・継続的影響を定量評価することができた。また,マレーシアのオイルパーム農園及び泥炭林において,泥炭分解による炭素放出の起源とその季節変化を解明するために,泥炭から大気に放出されるCO2を定期的に採取し,その14C年代の分析を進めている。
開発した簡易測定法を用いて,オイルパーム苗のイソプレン放出能力を評価する実験系を確立し,現地においてイソプレン放出量が少ない系統を数個体選別できた。
熱帯泥炭からのCO2・CH4収支を推定するために必要な土地被覆/利用図,泥炭領域図,排水/非排水領域図,降水量分布図を作成した。また,森林の炭素蓄積量を評価するための森林バイオマス地図の作成し検証中である。
熱帯泥炭地における炭素収支評価のため,熱帯泥炭の生態系モデルの改良を行い,広域評価のため2000~2020年の気象データを整備した。土地被覆の状況に応じた呼吸式の開発も行った。
2020年を対象とした森林伐採実験から,乾季が不明瞭となるラニーニャ年ではほぼ1年を通じて降水量の減少があることが分かった。また,ボルネオ島の北部と南部の比較から,乾季の降水量が比較的多い北部では,乾季の後半にかけても森林伐採による降水量の減少が認められた。以上の結果から,森林伐採による降水量の減少は,伐採前の降水量の多寡に概ね対応しており,降水量の多い時期や地域で顕著に現れる傾向にあることが分かった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

泥炭土壌のpHを変化させた培養実験におけるCH4生成能と微生物群集の変化の結果についての論文について誌上発表を進める。インドネシア泥炭地の炭素年代測定に関するデータを取りまとめ,論文投稿を進める。マレーシアの熱帯泥炭地のオイルパーム農園に関する観測結果を蓄積し,そのデータを取りまとめ,論文投稿を進める。
マレーシアの熱帯泥炭林サイトで得られる14C年代の深さ分布等の結果を,オイルパーム農園への転換後25年以上経過したサイトにおける結果と比較することで,熱帯泥炭林からオイルパーム農園への転換が土壌炭素貯留機能に与える長期的な影響を評価する。インドネシアにおける調査結果については論文として公表する。現地研究者との連携を引き続き強化しつつも,現地へ渡航しての調査を実施し,研究の進展を加速させる。
降水量に基づいた地下水位分布図を作成後,衛星リモートセンシングデータとフィールド観測結果を融合して東南アジアの熱帯泥炭における月ごとのCO2・CH4収支インベントリを作成する。また,森林バイオマス地図と土地被覆/利用図を組みわせた,炭素排出量の評価も行う。
生育初期のオイルパームの観測データに即したパラメタリゼーションを行った後,改良した生態系モデル,気象データ,年々の土地被覆変化等を用いて炭素収支の評価を行う。また土地被覆変化や気象変動を加味したシナリオの計算を行う。
熱帯の島と周辺海洋では海陸風循環が卓越しており,この循環が降水量の時空間分布の決定に重要な役割を担っている。本課題では主に森林伐採による島内の水循環変化に着目したが,この影響は海陸風循環の応答を通じて,島の周辺海域にまで波及している可能性がある。このように島内部の陸面過程が島の周囲の海洋と大気に与える影響は未解明であり,今後の研究が期待される。
