Outline of Research at the Start

北極海氷縮小によって大気-陸域水循環が大きく変動する北ユーラシア永久凍土域を対象に、多圏(大気・陸域・海洋)にまたがり起源別の水の動きを追跡する水循環統合モデルを開発し、衛星リモートセンシングデータを活用して湛水域時系列マップと植生変化域時系列マップを作成する。それらを用いて、並行して開発中の陸域生態系物質循環モデルにより、温室効果気体の放出・吸収量の時系列マップを作成する。北ユーラシアの複数点で温室効果気体フラックス観測を行い、得られた観測データを機械学習によるデータ駆動型経験モデルを用いて広域化し、温室効果気体の放出・吸収量の時系列マップの検証を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

4つの班が連携し、目的達成に向けた活動を継続した。陸域観測班は、公開されている二酸化炭素フラックスデータとシベリアで観測された二酸化炭素濃度データを解析し、2004-2018年における秋季の寒冷化傾向は光合成量よりも生態系呼吸量を大幅に低下させるため、結果的に二酸化炭素放出量が抑制されることを明らかにし、ハイインパクトな国際学術誌に公表した(Kondo et al., 2023: Nature Climate Change)。陸域モデル班は、トレーサーモデュールと滞留時間モデュールを組み込んだ水循環統合モデルを用いてレナ川流域における水循環要素の起源と滞留時間を定量評価し、国際学術誌に公表した(Park et al., 2022: Frontiers in Earth Science)。また、1980年代以降増加傾向にあったレナ川流域の冬季河川流出量の原因を大気再解析データと水循環統合モデルによって明らかにし、国際学術誌に公表した(Hiyama et al., 2023: Journal of Hydrology)。大気班は、昨年度明らかにした解析結果(シベリアの大気水蒸気量に占める北極海蒸発起源の水蒸気の割合が2005年以降徐々に増加し、9月には西シベリアで、10月~12月には東シベリアで増加傾向が顕著であった知見)をハイインパクトな国際学術誌に公表した(Sato et al., 2022: npj Climate and Atmospheric Science)。また、大気再解析データを活用することで、北ユーラシアにおける温帯低気圧に影響を与える総観規模波動擾乱の統計的分類を試み、降水システムの経年変動特性を明らかにした。統括班は、合成開口レーダ後方散乱強度の変化から植生を含む地表面状態の変化検出手法を検討し、近年の永久凍土荒廃(サーモカルスト)を定量評価した。

Reason

陸域観測班は2022年7月、海外寒冷地向けフラックス観測システムを北モンゴルのカラマツ林に設置し、フラックス観測を開始した。解析面では、2004-2018年における秋季の寒冷化傾向が二酸化炭素放出量を抑えることを解明し、ハイインパクトな国際学術誌に公表できたことは特筆すべき成果である。陸域モデル班の研究内容(トレーサーモデュールと滞留時間モデュールを組み込んだ水循環統合モデルの解析結果)も斬新であり、最終年度までに、北ユーラシアと北米の永久凍土域における地下氷融解とその河川流出への寄与を定量評価できる可能性が高い。大気班も、上述した研究実績以外に北ユーラシアを対象とした様々な解析を行った。例えば、大規模アンサンブル気候実験データを用いて、東シベリアの夏季降水量の変動と温暖化との関わりについて解析を行った結果、温暖化にともない、シベリア上の低気圧傾向とモンゴル上の高気圧傾向が強化されることで、ユーラシア大陸西方からの水蒸気輸送量が増加傾向を示し、東シベリアの夏季降水量が増加することを明らかにした。統括班はPAWCs月例オンラインセミナーを継続し、研究分担者間で研究の進捗状況を定期的に共有するとともに、研究分担者会議を定期的に行い、残された研究課題の共有と議論を行った。モンゴルやロシア側の研究者とも定期的に研究打合せを行い、2023年3月6日~10日に開催されたISAR-7(Seventh International Symposium on Arctic Research:第7回国際北極研究シンポジウム)に招へいすることで、研究の進捗状況を対面で共有し議論することができた。以上のように、ウクライナにおける戦争の影響で実施困難となった東シベリアにおける現地観測以外の研究計画は、概ね順調に進展している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

4つの班が連携し、目的達成に向けた研究活動を継続する。陸域観測班は温室効果気体フラックス観測データと衛星リモートセンシングデータを活用し、北ユーラシアと北米の永久凍土域における温室効果気体フラックスの時空間分布を、気候変動にともなう季節変動特性変化と経年変化傾向に着目して解析する。また、統括班が作成する植生変化域マップの基礎データとなる植生マップを作成する。ウクライナにおける戦争の影響で実現していない海外寒冷地向けフラックス観測システムの東シベリアへの輸送とカラマツ林への設置を行い、フラックス観測データを取得する。陸域モデル班は大気再解析データや将来予測実験データを活用し、水循環統合モデルを用いて温暖化環境下での陸水の挙動を解析する。また、統括班が作成する湛水域マップを用いることで、陸域生態系物質循環モデルによりメタン放出量の推定を行う。大気班は水蒸気トレーサーモデルを用いて極端現象の事例発生時における降水の起源解析を行い、北極海起源水と陸域起源水の輸送量と輸送経路を定量的に診断する。また、極端現象をもたらすatmospheric riversと波動擾乱との関わりを解析する。そして将来予測実験データを活用し、温暖化レベル(将来シナリオ)ごとの大気水循環変化の差異と北極海氷縮小との関係について解析する。統括班は、データフュージョン技術を活用して北ユーラシアにおける湛水域マップと植生変化域マップを作成・公開する。また、SAR解析により永久凍土荒廃マップを作成する。そして陸域モデル班と連携し、水循環統合モデルのプロダクトを用いて湛水域マップを作成する。PAWCs月例オンラインセミナーを継続し、研究分担者間で研究の進捗状況を定期的に共有する。現地研究者ともオンラインで定期的に研究打合せを行うとともに、国際シンポジウムを2024年3月に開催し、研究成果を共有する。
