Outline of Research at the Start

地球や惑星は太陽から常に多大な影響を受けている。太陽からは電磁波だけでなく超音速のプラズマ流が恒常的に惑星に吹き付けられ、これを太陽風と呼ぶ。特に近年では太陽風が地球や惑星の居住環境に及ぼす影響が幅広く議論されている。太陽風が強すぎると地球の磁気圏が圧縮され、大気の流出や高エネルギー放射線の流入に繋がりかねない。生物がなぜ地球に居住できるか理解するためには、太陽風がどのようなメカニズムで駆動され、どのような歴史を経てきたか理解しなければならない。このような研究背景のもと、研究代表者はスーパーコンピュータによる大規模シミュレーションや最新探査機の観測結果を用いて太陽風の駆動メカニズムに迫る。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度は1.最新太陽風観測データ解釈に向けた大規模数値シミュレーション、2.太陽型星のXUV放射モデリングの二つの研究課題に取り組んだ。
NASAの新太陽風探査機Parker Solar Probeの驚くべき初期成果の一つが局所的磁気反転現象(磁気スイッチバック)の発見である。磁気スイッチバックはプラズマの性質上不安定な磁気構造を持っており、何故そのような構造が太陽風中に普遍的に存在できるか、その理論的解釈が求められた。私はこれまでの数値計算の実績を活かし、観測された太陽風を数値計算で再現することで磁気スイッチバックの形成メカニズムの理解に挑戦した。シミュレーションの結果、プラズマの波動(アルベーン波)が非線形的に成長することで自然と磁気スイッチバックが形成されることを示した。これは一見不安定に見える磁気スイッチバックは非線形段階まで視点を広げれば実は自然な構造であることを意味し、磁気スイッチバックの理解に大きなインパクトを与えた。
第二の課題として取り組んだ太陽型星のXUV放射は近年系外惑星研究において非常に重要視されている。太陽のような恒星(小質量主系列星)は強いX線、紫外線(両者合わせてXUV)を放っており、それらは惑星大気の成長、散逸、さらに惑星の居住可能性そのものに中心的な影響を与える。ところが恒星XUV放射(特に極端紫外線放射)は直接観測することが原理的にほぼ不可能であり、その特性を知るためには経験則を用いるしかなかった。そこで私は太陽XUV放射を第一原理的に再現できるような理論モデルを構築し、さらにそれを一般の恒星へと応用することで恒星XUV放射に関する普遍的スケーリング則を導出した。これを用いることで、観測可能量であるX線放射から観測不能量である極端紫外線放射を理論的に推定することが可能となり、今後の系外惑星研究に大きなインパクトを与えると期待される。
