エジプトのムスリム社会では、近代以降現代に至るまで、クルアーン（コーラン）解釈をめぐり改革派層と保守派層の間で対立が続いている。本研究は、この対立がどのような思想的・社会的構造のなかで生じているのかを解明することを目的とし、近代化・西洋化を推進したカイロ大学の出身者と、伝統的イスラーム教育の権威であるアズハル大学の出身者による、アラビア語解釈書を比較分析する。双方の大学から、ビント・シャーティウ、アブー・ザイド、シャアラーウィーなど、3名ずつ計6名をとりあげ、解釈の特徴と社会での受容という2つの観点から論じる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
"Modern Qur'an Interpreters and Exile as Cross-Border Exile: Fazlul Rahman and Nasr Abu Zayd," analyzed the interpretation of the Qur'an by Cairo University scholar Abu Zayd, pointing out the difficulty of modernizing the interpretation of the Qur'an, which is the word of God.
In addition, "Labor and Gender in Islamic Scriptures: Qur'an and its Interpretation Possibilities" (to be published in 2023), analyzed the interpretation of the Qur'an by Sha'alawi, a scholar from Al-Azhar, and clarified that the interpretation of the Qur'an, which is the word of God, has a strong conservatism with support of the general public.
They represent the tension between conservative (Al-Azhar University) and innovation (Cairo University) interpretation of the Qur'an in contemporary Egypt.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
一般的にイスラームはクルアーンに書かれていることに厳格に従って生活していると考えられることが多い。だが実際には時代や地域によってクルアーンの解釈が変化しており、クルアーンに基づきつつ柔軟な現実との折衷が展開されてきた。本研究は現代エジプトのクルアーン解釈に焦点をあてたものであるが、この現実との柔軟な折衷の実態について解明することができた。このため、イスラームの一般的イメージとは異なる柔軟さとまた同時に伝統を墨守する性質の根強さの双方を具体的に示すことができた。
学術的にも社会的にもイスラーム社会における聖典クルアーンの役割の重要性と、信徒による解釈の多様性を明らかにすることができた。
