Outline of Research at the Start |
The project aims to shed new light on the idealist theory of life and its roots in the theory of matter. This focus on life and matter constitutes an innovative approach to modern philosophical idealism. The focus will be historical in particular, examining evolving theories of life as they developed in, and arguably gave rise to, the main idealist schools of philosophy in Britain and Germany, and evolved through thinkers in France and the Dutch Republic. Three principal objectives stem from the central aim, each concerning a distinct period in the developing theory of life.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
-21 experts from Canada, USA, UK, Germany, Hungary, Thailand, & Japan, of international repute in philosophy, history, religion, & literature, have produced research on dynamic idealist theories of life & matter in the period 1650-1850. -We also produced an online conference (2021/03-04), with essays, videos, & audio recordings publicly available online, at https://tinyurl.com/s29ht2m7 -I gave a lecture (2020/03) & seminar to a philosophy & culture research group based in Oxford, UK, publicly available at https://tinyurl.com/2muvmd5k -In 2020/12, Aeon, a public-interest, intellectual magazine, invited me to write a 4000-word overview of my research, which I finished in 2021/03. -A book presenting essays from all contributors is in preparation & Oxford University Press are interested in publishing it.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Due to the covid pandemic, the work has been delayed. The conference was a success, despite having to be changed to online, but the online nature meant insufficient discussion took place. All contributors hope the project can be extended by one or two years so that a meeting can take place at a university, e.g. Tokyo, in 2022, which will help produce a better body or research that will be disseminated in a book that will be an important contribution to a number of subjects in the humanities and the history of science.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Work is ongoing to generate more discussion between contributors. Also, the essays will be peer reviewed by a small number of experts in the field who have been invited to assess each contribution and offer constructive criticism. This counts as work towards the book, which will be the major research product of this project.
My essay for Aeon was commenced in 2020/12 and work continued on it until 2021/04, the planned publication date.
A request for two more years as an official JSPS project will be made in 2022/01, due to covid delays.
