本研究は、江戸時代に描かれた「大津絵」を考察の対象とし、図像学と芸能史学をつなぐ観点から、大津絵文化が発生した理由を芸能民が集う「場」の歴史から捉える。とくに「念仏芸能」・「民俗芸能」・「舞台芸能」の三支点から大津絵の画題を読み解くことで、近世期の民衆的絵画が「芸能文化の基層」によって育まれた史実を立証するものである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, the purpose was to research the Otsu-e in an American museums. We conducted research at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum. This field survey confirmed that today's the United States museums hold around 80 Otsu-e paintings. This research has provided the basis for a picture of Otsu-e in the United States. This research had also do to presentations and exhibitions in France, Korea, and Japan to understand the origins of Otsu-e from the history of the performing peoples. These international symposiums do to presentations of research results that positioned Otsu-e as the source of Japan's ukiyo-e culture. We presented the results of our research linking Otsu-e and performing arts culture in a paper.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来の大津絵研究は民藝の範疇にて行われる傾向にあったが、本研究では図像学と芸能史をつなぐ観点から大津絵誕生の理由を芸能民の歴史性から捉える論文発表を行い、新たに大津絵の芸能起源説を提唱するにいたった。またこれまで未調査であったアメリカの博物館・美術館に遺存する大津絵の悉皆調査を実施し、作品状態や来歴を示す目録作成し、アメリカへの作品伝播の歴史を把握した学術的意義を有する。
本研究を通じて、フランスや韓国の国際学術シンポジウムにて大津絵を取り上げることで諸外国の人々に日本の大津絵を深く知る機会を提供し、今後、欧州並びに米国にて展覧会等が開催され、大津絵に関する研究が進展する社会的意義を有する。
