Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study focused on the role John Hawkesworth played in spreading crucial knowledge of the South Seas through the publication of the Voyages (1773) in terms of the following two points. First, this study elucidated how human sexuality in Tahiti, as revealed in the second volume of the Voyages, substantiated the sexual system of Linnaean botany and thereby motivated Darwin to produce The Loves of the Plants (1789). Secondly, this study examined the various responses to the idea of the 'Arioi’first communicated in Hawkesworth’s Voyages in contemporary literature, history, philosophy and twentieth-century French drama: namely, in Darwin’s The Loves of the Plants (1789), Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-88), Thomas Malthus’s An Essay on the Principle of Population (1803), Denis Diderot’s‘Supplement to Bougainville's Voyage’(1796[1772]), and Jean Giraudoux’s Supplement Au Voyage De Cook(1937).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
