Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、日本語や他のアジア言語に特徴的に観察される削除現象と数を表す数量詞の解釈を切り口に、人間言語における文構造とその意味・音声解釈の適切な関係の在り方を探求する。日本での実証研究、そしてインドネシアとシンガポールでのフィールドワークを通じてこれらの領域における新たなデータを発掘することによって、構造と意味・音声との関係が自然言語ではどのように成立しているのかという、いわゆるインターフェイス条件の性質の解明を本課題の主要な研究上の問いとする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2023年度は、様々な省略現象の研究を通じて、統語-音韻-意味のインターフェイスに課される性質を研究した。その過程で、自然言語の省略現象のメカニズムとして、意味的同一性が働く領域と実際に発音上削除される部分が統語計算上ずれているとする仮説を検証し、この仮説を2023年9月に津田塾大学にてハイブリッド形式で開催されたCurrentIssues in Comparative Syntax 2: Boundaries of Ellipsis Mismatchまたは韓国生成文法学会での招待講演にて口頭発表を行った。また、省略の各論研究として、日本語の付加詞読みの容認性に関する個人差の違いについて、60人の日本語話者を対象とした共同研究を行い、Seoul International Conference on Generative Grammarをはじめとした国際学会にて発表した。

今年度行った省略または作用域の解釈に関する研究の成果については、すでにNatural Language Semantics, Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, Journal of East Asian Linguistics, Semantics and Pragmaticsなどの国際雑誌で現在査読中である。

本研究課題の成果公開の一つとしても、本科研費のもと、上記のワークショップを9月1日~9月3日の三日間行い、世界で活躍されている省略と省略上のミスマッチに関する様々な研究を学ぶことができ大変有益な成果が挙げられた。この学会で発表された東アジア言語の省略現象に関わる発表のいくつかについては厳正な査読に基づいてJournal of East Asian Linguisticsの特別号として公開される予定である。

Reason

本研究課題で設定した「省略現象から見えるインターフェイスの在り方を探る」という独自の視点が研究代表者が集中的にこれまで研究してきた日本語、中国語、英語、シンガポール英語、インドネシア語などの言語の様々な省略現象の分析の方向性に大きな指針を与えてくれたことが主な理由として挙げられる。また、今年度は、これまで3年間の研究成果を数多くの口頭発表で紹介する機会に恵まれたため、一年間集中して本研究課題に取り組めたことも理由としてあげられる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度は、本研究の最終年度に当たるため、現在投稿中の省略や作用域に関わる全ての論文の修正・再校・出版を目指すことがまずは何よりの目標である。

この研究と並行して、同時に本研究を通じて、省略下における採用域の解釈またはある省略構文の容認可能性について同一言語の話者でも大きな隔たりがあることが分かってきた。そこで、上記の出版活動と同時進行で、その成果を現在研究中の「内因的計算可変性」(endogenous computational variability)という競合文法モデルのもとで再定式化し、この研究プログラムの理論的・実験的検証を、実験統語論がご専門の津田塾大学の小野創氏、生成文法による類型論や言語の創発モデルにお詳しい東京大学の小田博宗氏との共同研究に基づいて、さらに進展させる予定である。
