Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

There are two outcomes achieved during the funding period. One concerns the difference between two types of wh-phrases in Japanese with regard to where they can occur and where they cannot. Whether the pattern of their distribution can be found in input data was examined using frequency data in child-directed speech (Fujii 2019). The results suggest that relying only on the frequency data may lead to a hypothesis that is too restrictive about where a certain type of wh-phrases can occur. The other outcome was a preliminary study of Japanese phrase structure acquisition, which applied an approach balancing between grammars' simplicity and their goodness of fit with data to the problem of distinguishing between different phrase structure grammars that generate the same strings of words (Fujii and Yamashita 2021).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
