Outline of Research at the Start |
This research is a multi-country, multi-cultural project examining the usage and impact of virtual exchange as an educational tool in higher education. We will connect participants locally and internationally through virtual exchange collaborating with institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The use of virtual exchange and various kinds of online education developed significantly over the period of the study due to the Covid-19 pandemic and became more common and central to learning around the world. The findings of this research show that virtual exchange significantly impacts the structure of the classroom, blurring the lines between the classroom and the real world. The relationships between the participants also changed: the role of the teacher becomes more of a facilitator and the students become more central and active in the learning process. Virtual exchanges allow a larger number of students to have intercultural experiences and impact the intercultural sensitivity of the participants but only in long-term programmes over a whole semester. Short-term programmes have little impact. Pilot studies on physical study abroad programmes which we also undertook but were limited by the impact of Covid-19 had a more significant impact on cultural sensitivity.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
グローバル化とバーチャル環境の両方が増加した現代社会において、教育においてますます重要な役割を果たす中、異文化間能力の情緒的側面である異文化感受性を扱う研究は社会的にも科学的にも大きな価値があるといえる。私たちは、今回の研究を通して、先行研究において開発された異文化感受性尺度は必ずしも全ての文化的文脈に応用できず、より日本の文脈に沿った測定方法を開発する必要があることを発見した。今後は、日本における測定方法の開発に加え、アフリカ地域、特にブルンジとケニアにおける更なる研究を行う予定である。この分野の研究はアフリカではほとんど行われていないため、グローバルな観点からも意義があるといえる。
