Outline of Research at the Start |
The research will be mainly qualitative, using interview data and documentary analysis, supported by descriptive statistics. It will be a study of language in use by medical professionals, which will be used to build pedagogic materials and syllabuses.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2022, a portable recording studio was designed and developed for use in hospital-based research. This was trialled using a translated document to build a short video presentation relating to endoscopy. The research on endoscopy influenced long-term research on technical words and word parts. Contact was made with the university’s endoscopy department and also at a neurosurgery department at a hospital near the Higashi-Hiroshima campus. The approach to medical English research was described in a book chapter for Palgrave MacMillan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research team were able to use existing contacts at the university medical campus and another hospital to get permission to undertake hospital-based research. The team's technical expert on equipment, Marshall Higa, made very good progress on designing and developing the portable recording studio.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The team plans to translate and analyze key hospital documents, document and summarize a number of medical procedures, then develop video and other materials on Moodle. Where possible interviews with medical professionals will be used to identify specific English language needs at the hospitals involved in the research.
