Outline of Research at the Start |
The study investigates how Japanese Teachers of English (JTE) and native English speaker Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) in secondary schools interpret the objectives of the Monbukagakusho’s English Education Reform Plan and attempt to put them into practice.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As mentioned in previous reports, difficulties with accessing research sites and securing participants resulted in a shift to the analysis of high school-level English textbooks, focusing on how the phenomenon of globalization is depicted to impact Japan and what roles the English language plays in facilitating this process.
An initial analysis was completed, but the researcher decided to perform the analysis once again based on an updated list of the most commonly used high school-level English textbooks in Japan.
This analysis is nearly complete and will be used as the basis for forthcoming submissions to academic conferences and journals.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Having completed an initial analysis, the researcher decided to perform the analysis once again based on an updated list of the most commonly used textbooks in Japanese high schools for the most recent academic year (2022). This analysis is nearly complete and will be used as the basis for forthcoming submissions to academic conferences and journals (see further information below).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Results of the updated analysis will be submitted as an individual paper presentation at the 2023 Conference of the American Association of Applied Linguistics (submissions open from June 1). Concurrently, the research is preparing a publication manuscript.
