Outline of Research at the Start

The research sets out to measure motivational changes in university students over the first two years of compulsory English classes. Growth in language proficiency will also be tracked. Qualitative data is used to identify students who will be interviewed to discover reasons for motivational change.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project was very fruitful and we were able to achieve the goals. First, we developed a questionnaire and piloted it with a group of students, and then we modified it and conducted our main study. We used the questionnaire to measure the motivation of approximately 600 Japanese university students. The questionnaire was administered three times over the course of an academic year, and we were able to give the questionnaire to the same cohort of students for two years. We also measured their language proficiency, and we were able to interview eight students multiple times over the course of two years. These interviews gave further insights into the motivation of students.
Having gathered the data, we presented the results of our study at several international conferences and have been able to publish two papers in high-level academic journals within our field. We also have a third paper which has been submitted to a journal for consideration.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

Through our research we showed that in order to increase the motivation and therefore proficiency of students, teachers need to ensure that classroom activities are intrinsically motivating, and also provide students with experiences of success. This provides clear guidance for teachers.
