本研究の目的は、どのような特徴を備えた英語学習者が留学環境における語用論的発達を見せるのかを探るため、学習者の動機づけを中心とした個別要因と語用論的発達の相関を明らかにすることである。
英語学習者の語用論的な発達においては、近年、学習者の「個人差」が大きい要因とされ、研究者の間では「教室環境」のみならず「留学環境」での語用論的発達の個人差に対しても高い関心が持たれている。そこで本研究では学習者の個別要因として特に学習者の語用論的に特化した動機づけに着目し、それと留学環境下での語用論的発達との関係を明らかにした上で、個人差に配慮した効果的な留学プログラム構築への示唆を目指したいと考えている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines how individual differences in pragmatic motivation influence the development of pragmatic competence in English learners studying abroad, focusing specifically on their comprehension of conversational implicatures. The analysis identified five key factors of pragmatic motivation among Japanese English learners: “Meaning Conveyance,” “Difficulty in Language Use,” “Cultural Familiarity,” “Appropriacy,” and “Situational Acquisition.” The findings revealed that among “leap-forward” learners, who showed remarkable improvement in pragmatic competence within a study abroad environment, there is a positive correlation between “Cultural Familiarity” and increased scores on pragmatic competence tests.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
異文化コミュニケーション能力に関わる「語用論的発達」をいかに効果的に促進させていくかを探ることはグローバル化時代における喫緊の課題であり、留学環境における語用論的発達の調査は、その基礎研究の一部として極めて重要であると言える。本研究では特に「語用論的動機づけ」に着目し、どのような特徴を備えた学習者が留学環境下で語用論的能力を発達させやすいかを検討した。その結果、「文化への親しみ」の語用論的動機づけ因子が、留学環境下の語用論的発達に関連することが示された。今後のさらなる研究により、より効果的に語用論的能力を高められる留学プログラム構築への応用が期待される。
