Outline of Research at the Start

Focusing on the epistolary correspondence of Stanislas Julien and Leon de Rosny, this research will uncover the different routes used by European scholars to collect and publish East Asian texts during the 19th century in order to understand the complex interactions these scholars had with East Asia.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In 2023, I was finally able to conduct research in the following archives: Bibliotheque Mazarine (Paris, France), Congregation de la Mission, archives Lazaristes (Paris, France), Archives Nationales (Paris, France). I collected several hundred of letters related to Stanislas Julien.

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

The project has been severely delayed for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemics that prevented me to leave Japan to collect material in the archives. However, after three years, I was finally able to go to France to conduct my research and find the material I needed for my research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I have already sent an article analyzing my findings that will be published in early 2025 in a an edited volume on Japan, China and Europe. I am also currently finishing editing a volume on Stanislas Julien's letters that he sent to China in the 1830s. The volume will be published by my university in 2024.
