| Outline of Research at the Start |
My proposed project investigates why Japanese youth do not participate in politics whereas British youth are re-engaging with politics. I investigate through in-depth interviews and an opinion survey.
|
| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The project conducted in-depth interviews and an online survey to examine young people's political participation and values. Project achievements thus far are two articles and a presentation at an international conference. 1. “Young People and Politics.” Kyoto Journal. Issue 97. 2021. 2. “Are the Kids Alright? Youth Turnout in the 2021 General Election.” In Japan Decides 2021. Pekkanen, Robert J., Reed, Steven, and Scheiner, Ethan. (Editors). Palgrave. 2022. “Saviors or Slackers? Young People’s Preferences in a Not-so-Silver Democracy.” American Political Science Association Annual Meeting, Washington D.C. September 6th, 2019. Young People and Politics Panel, convener and discussant. European Association for Japanese Studies. Ghent, August 19th, 2023.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
Young people are an important group to study. While we reject the idea that policy output is a zero sum game in which if old people ‘win’ then ‘young people’ lose, unequal participation among young people leads to unequal adult participation.
