世俗化論、世俗主義論、宗教概念に関する最近の学問的動向を研究するとともに、宗教の復興、ファンダメンタリズムの台頭、移民の増加による宗教的多様化の進展といった社会状況が提起する種々の問題に対応しうる理論的構想の枠組みを探求する。（１）世俗化論、世俗主義論および宗教概念を批判的に吟味する視点からみた場合、西洋および非西洋における政治的近代に関する従来の歴史理解がどのような修正を迫られ、どのような近代像が生まれるのか、という問いと、（２）リベラリズムとデモクラシーの2つの政治理念が、宗教をめぐる種々の問題に対応し、解決に寄与するために、どのような原理と枠組みを提供しうるのか、という問いに取り組む。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project addresses two questions. The first question is historical: How is the common understanding about Western and non-Western political modernity changed, if we critically examine theories of secularization, secularism, and religion? The second question is theoretical and normative: What principles and frameworks emerge on the basis of the above critical considerations about modernity?

第１の意義は、研究上の意義に関わる。それは世俗化論、世俗主義論、宗教概念を批判的に検討している最近の学問的動向を鑑みて、政治と宗教の関係をめぐる近代的理解の再検討をおこなった点にある。第２の意義は、社会的貢献にも関わるもので、従来の研究が主に欧米を対象としてきたのに対して、欧米と日本の事例の双方を対象とし、相互の事例の比較検討をおこなった点にある。
