Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、サブストームに伴う高エネルギーイオン・電子の地球近傍への注入(インジェクション)によって、内部磁気圏に発生する超低周波(~100-101 mHz)の磁気流体波動(ULF波)の特性を調べ、インジェクションと密接に関連する波動励起機構を解明することである。SuperDARN短波レーダー網による電離圏観測と、地磁気データ、及び複数の人工衛星による内部磁気圏での直接観測とを組み合わた総合的な解析により、磁束管の両側に位置する電離圏と磁気圏の両方を同時観測することで、複数提唱されている磁束管ULF波の励起過程に関する仮説を観測に基づいて定量的に検証する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

研究計画1) 磁束管振動・伝搬特性と外部条件依存性を調べることを目的として、引き続き中緯度~サブオーロラ帯緯度での磁束管振動の伝搬に関する解析をおよび研究を行った。昨年度までの研究で、理論や経験モデルから予想されるサブオーロラ帯緯度での磁束管振動の周波数より、実際に観測される周波数はかなり低いことがわかり、従来提唱されている磁力線共鳴というメカニズムではうまく説明できないことが示唆された。ただ得られた事例数が少なく普遍的な事実として同定するには至らなかった。今年度は同じような観測の事例数を増やすために、解析範囲を2023年の秋冬シーズンまで拡張し、同様の磁束管振動を複数同定することができた。新規同定事例についての詳細な解析を行っている最中である。研究計画 2)で進めている衛星+レーダーの同時共役観測については、上記の新規事例同定により、サブオーロラ帯での速い西向きプラズマ流構造(SAPS: Subauroral Polarization Streams) を磁気圏-電離圏で共役観測した事例が増加した。それらの新規事例の中で、疑似オーロラ爆発に伴って複数衛星+電離圏レーダーによる同時共役SAPS観測に成功している事例があり、それについて詳細な解析を進めた。結果として、疑似オーロラ爆発のようなかなり小規模なオーロラ発達であっても、磁気圏への高エネルギー粒子注入とその経度方向への分布の広がりに伴って、SAPSの方もより西側へ、そしてより低緯度方向に拡大していることがわかった。研究計画 3)については、昨年度から行っている電子雲の空間構造に関して、電子の軌道及び空間発展を演繹的に調べるための粒子軌道計算コードの開発と、その改良を行った。

Reason

研究計画 1)については、当初想定していたより得られる観測事例数が少なく、そのため今年度はさらなる新規事例の同定と詳細解析のために、多くの時間を費やす必要があった。研究計画 2)に関しては、昨年度から継続して行っている論文化を進めつつも、疑似オーロラ爆発に付随した電離圏高速プラズマ流の事例が、本研究計画と深い関連があるため、そちらの事例詳細解析にある程度の時間を割り当てていたことが、当初の予定通りの進捗を得られなかった原因である。一方、研究計画 3)については、電子雲の空間発展を理論的に解析するためのシミュレーションコードの開発に予想以上の時間を要している。電子軌道の解法を相対論化するなどの改良をした上で、観測結果を解釈するための理論計算を行う必要がある。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

昨年度に続いて、さらに研究期間を1年延長することとし、来年度を最終年度として、これまでの研究で得られた結果を総括して、学術論文という成果として結実させることに全力を注ぐつもりである。また今年度について海外への渡航が可能となり、米国地球物理学会へ現地参加することができ、それによって海外の研究者の前で本研究の結果を発表して多くの議論や知見を得ることができた。また現地で電離圏レーダー関係者と多くの議論を行うことができ、データに関する疑問点を解決し、またそれにより科学的解釈を補強することができた。これらの議論をベースにして、科学的成果の論文化を進める。
