Outline of Research at the Start

1854年安政東海・南海地震津波や1944年昭和東南海地震津波など、19世紀後半以降、太平洋を横断する巨大遠地津波が各地の検潮所で記録されているが、定量的解析対象とされてこなかった。2011年東北沖地震津波が太平洋を横断し南米沖で観測された波形を、Watada et al. 2014は革新的遠地津波伝播理論により世界で初めて再現に成功した。この研究成果に基づき1960年チリ地震や1906年コロンビア・エクアドル地震などの破壊過程を遠地津波記録から解析する研究が急速に立ち上がりつつある。本研究では、遠地沿岸津波波形解析から、19世紀後半から20世紀前半までの巨大地震の断層運動を決定する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

以下に出版されたレビュー論文の概要を記載する。
2010年チリ地震と2011年東北沖地震で発生し、太平洋深海域で観測された豊富で高品質の遠地津波記録には、震源から離れるにつれ、津波の到達時刻は遅れ、津波の初期位相が反転する特徴が現れた。これら二つの特徴は従来の津波長波理論では説明できず、新しい津波理論が求められた。津波伝播中に海面が上昇すると、海水の荷重で海水が圧縮され、海底と固体地球が変形する。伝播する津波は地球の質量分布を変化させ、重力の時空間的変化を引き起こし、伝播する津波自体を変化させる。これらの物理過程を取り入れた、津波を固体地球層と海洋層から構成される重力・弾性結合した地球系の波として扱う新たな津波伝播理論が構築された。新しい津波伝播理論に基づき、2つの異なる津波シミュレーション手法が開発され、ほぼ同一の津波波形を生成することが確認された。一つのシミュレーション手法は津波を、重力・弾性結合地球系に内在する自由波として扱い、もう一つの手法は津波を、重力・弾性変形する固体地球の表面を伝播する固体地球への外部圧力源と重力源として扱った。新しい津波シミュレーション手法を用いると、観測された遠地津波とシミュレーション津波の波形と到達時刻の違いが解消した。これまで、到達時刻や波形の不一致の問題があったため、沿岸の潮位計によって記録された遠地津波は、定量的な津波波形研究の対象ではなかったが、新しい津波シミュレーション手法が、過去19の巨大地震で発生した津波波形の解析に適用され、各巨大地震の断層滑り分布が明らかにされた。また、江戸時代末期の1854年に日本付近で発生し、米国の潮位計に記録された太平洋横断津波イベントの地震発生時刻が特定された。
