Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Environmental stress leads to various health problems and diseases. One of the causes is the impaired adaptive capacity to stress caused by clock proteins such as BMAL1. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the protein code that regulates cellular clock synchronization, which is the basis of adaptation to environmental stress. In this study, we 1) confirmed the acute synchronous shift (ISR) of nucleocytoplasmic localization of BMAL1:CLOCK in the early phase of cellular clock synchronization, and showed that the S region of BMAL1 (BMAL1-S) is essential for the ISR and clock synchronization. Mathematical simulations showed that BMAL1 phosphorylation and nuclear localization are prerequisites for clock synchronization. 2) In the SCN, the central clock of the brain, BMAL1-S and its phosphorylation are essential for cellular clock synchronization.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
