Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Cardiac rehabilitation achieves improved quality of life, exercise tolerance and prevention of re-hospitalisation in patients with chronic heart failure. However, in Japan it is only approved for short periods of time. A prospective study was conducted with the hypothesis that ‘interruption of supervised cardiac rehabilitation in elderly patients with chronic heart failure impairs exercise tolerance’. 47 patients were enrolled and 39 patients were finally analysed, excluding excluded patients. Patients were divided into two groups: 14 in the rehabilitation interruption group and 25 in the rehabilitation continuation group. The rehabilitation interruption group showed significantly lower peak VO2, load and VO2/W since the interruption of rehabilitation; significant factors lowering peak VO2 were ‘interruption of rehabilitation’ and ‘age’. Interrupting the rehabilitation period in this study was found to be a factor that significantly lowered exercise tolerance.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
