Outline of Research at the Start |
The project examines efforts made by the seminary in Sri Lanka to help students take distance from national, class and linguistic attachments with the objective of forming a cosmopolitan clergy. Intercultural activities promoted by the national seminary generate complicated entanglements of race, class and ethnicity that future priests navigate through transnational training. With a focus on human mobility and religious networks, the research aims to understand how Catholicism in Asia takes distance from the trajectory of scandal and decline that has surrounded the clergy in the West.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY2023 I completed a 15-day fieldwork trip to Sri Lanka where I interviewed informants, visited sites, and collected some almost final data for my book project. Given that I am in the final stages of the manuscript preparation, these new data was key to complete 2 chapters and confirm some hypotheses. Most of the year was spent working on the manuscript and negotiating a book contract with a University Press in the US that is now confirmed. In terms of publications and presentations, I published a book chapter and a peer-reviewed article (still waiting the special issue publication). I presented my work at Shue Yan University in Hong Kong. Although I was supposed to be on panels at the AAR and AAA, due to the JPY depreciation it was not possible to make these trips to the United States.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Due to the travel constraints suffered during the pandemic I was not able to progress on my field research for three years. During that time, I had to limit my work to archival research and to some online interviews with informants. AY2023 allowed me to conduct further research and finally stand close to the completion of my ethnographic research project. One further field trip in AY2024 would help complete some final data collection, although I believe I already have enough data to finalize the book manuscript.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am currently in the final phase of data processing, analysis and writing. I plan to have no further article-length publications and concentrate AY2024 on editing and reviewing my book manuscript. If possible, I will conduct one more field trip during this year.
