Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Pictures, such as hand-drawn pictures and photographs, represent something in a distinct way. The way they work is called "depiction". The philosophy of depiction, a field that engages in puzzles around pictures with philosophical interests, has argued the nature of depiction in the analytic tradition since the 1960s. The philosophers of depiction have chiefly dealt with traditional pictures, especially artistic ones, and film photos. This study focuses on applying the theories and findings in the philosophy of depiction to modern cultures, popular ones in particular, such as comics, cartoons, advertising images, digital illustrations and photos, video games, emoticons and emojis, internet memes, and so on. The results gained are, first, to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of depiction in general, second, to articulate the features specific to each modern cultural form, and third, to demonstrate the usefulness and some shortage of the traditional theories of depiction.
