本研究は、明治20年代初頭のいわゆる元禄文学復興期において、当時文芸批評家として活躍していた内田不知庵（後の内田魯庵〔1868～1929〕）を中心に再評価の機運を見せた松尾芭蕉および蕉風俳諧に注目し、その評価の内容や諸相について検討する。明治20年代初期から中期に至る文学論の議論の枠組のなかで芭蕉および蕉風俳諧がどのように評価され、また位置づけられてきたのかを明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In general, literary history accounts state that haikai in the modern perspective began with Masaoka Shiki. However, before Masaoka Shiki, Uchida Fuchian had examined haikai from a modern and aesthetic point of view in his literary criticism. My series of studies were conducted to clarify the above events. By examining Fuchian's literary criticism one by one, we have clarified his thoughts on haikai. We also found out to which literature he refers.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
研究成果の学術的意義としては、従来ほとんど言及・考察されることのなかった子規以前の俳諧に関する言説について、おもに文芸批評の領域のなかでどのように語られていたかを考察したことにある。批評家として活躍をはじめていた内田不知庵がある出来事から俳書と出会い、それを繙読し、自らの文学観を通して俳諧を捉え評価していく。本研究ではそれを時系列に明治25年の『文学一斑』における叙情詩として俳諧を位置づけるところまで検討した。
