| Outline of Research at the Start |
モダリティの文法化に関する従来の研究では、典型的なモーダル的意味（例：日本語の「かもしれない」が表す認識的可能性の意味）をめぐる諸変化の方向性やそれが物語る言語間の普遍性と多様性といった重要な問題が追究されてきた。しかし、典型的なモーダル的意味から逸脱したほかの文法機能（例：譲歩・条件などの節連結機能）、いわゆるポストモーダル機能への拡張については体系的な分析が遅れている。本研究は、中国語のモダリティにおける接続詞・談話標識への転成に焦点をあて、モダリティにおける典型的なモーダル領域から複文（節連結）・談話の領域への機能拡張を動機づける要因を明らかにすることを目的とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The current study focuses on the further development of modal expressions, especially the expansions towards connectives and discourse markers. Based on several case studies of Mandarin Chinese, the process and motivation of such expansions have been discussed from typological and constructional perspectives.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
モダリティとほかの文法カテゴリーの架け橋となる本研究は、これまでのモダリティの文法化研究に対する強力な補足であり、さらなる発展でもある。本研究によって、モーダル機能とほかの文法機能との連続性および共通基盤を解明し、モダリティの多機能性に対する認識をいっそう深めるのみならず、その背景にある人間の認知能力の発達の解明やモダリティの習得研究・教育に対しても重要な示唆を与えることができる。また、本研究は、印欧語中心であったモダリティの研究に積極的に中国語のデータを取り入れ、言語類型論研究におけるアジア言語からの重要性を示すものでもあると考える。
