Outline of Research at the Start |
Over three years, this project will create and conduct reaction time experiments to investigate in what ways auditory, in addition to visual, input while learning and reviewing foreign language vocabulary benefits students' explicit and implicit knowledge of these words' forms.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to collect data as planned for the first few years of this study. However, I worked on different ways to address the research questions and have produced two manuscripts. One of these has been published, and the other is under review at a peer reviewed journal.
Progress has also been made towards data collection in the original manner, prompting the extension of this grant. Researchers from multiple universities across Japan have been recruited along with one international researcher, with the materials prepared and piloted. We are ready to collect data this fall and present on the results within the next academic year. These results should provide a more comprehensive answer to the proposed research questions than any past studies.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
My stated plans for the 2021-2023 research period were to begin collecting data when it was safe enough to do so. Unfortunately the COVID-19 situation has persisted, and I have been unable to meet with student participants face-to-face for the past year. I have therefore not made any progress in this regard. I do, however, have one manuscript currently under peer review related to this project and have made arrangements for data collection using the originally proposed research protocols starting this school year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
With data collection procedures decided and research collaborators assembled, I have arranged for data collection to begin from July of 2023. This would allow for data analysis and the presentation of results in the spring of 2024. As planned last year, I will work with other researchers across Japan and internationally who would be able to assist with efficient data collection and the creation of a large enough student sample to show the hypothesized results.
