リビア以西の北アフリカ（マグリブ）地域では、7世紀中葉以降、アラブ人勢力の進出によってイスラーム時代を迎え、宗教的・政治的変動が生じた。その実態は、イスラームの受容、征服者・移住者であるアラブ人の言語や文化の混淆、在地のベルベル人社会の存続といった様々な現象を含み、その進展速度や水準も各地で異なっていた。本研究ではイスラーム到来後の社会変容と統合の過程における「アラブ化」という現象に着目し、アラビア語年代記や地理書、旅行記といった叙述史料を用いて、7世紀後半から13世紀前半までのマグリブ地域におけるアラブ人とベルベル人の人口動態と勢力間交渉を、地域間の異同とそれが生じた原因から解明する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Following the Arab conquest, Islam was adopted to the Maghrib through two interrelated processes: Islamization and Arabization. These processes unfolded over an extended period and exhibited significant variations across each area and community. This study examined the social transformation of the Maghrib, with a particular focus on Arabization. It clarified the dynamics between Arabs and Berbers, including their genealogy, historical development, and settlement patterns.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来、前近代のマグリブ史は、政治史や王朝の変遷を中心に描かれることが多かったが、ベルベルやアラブといった地域住民の動態から、当該地域の社会構造やその変化を歴史的に明らかにすることができた。こうした成果は、マグリブ史の解明というだけでなく、イスラーム受容に伴う社会変容の事例として、初期イスラーム史の中に位置づけたり、他地域と比較すること可能とする。
