Outline of Research at the Start

世の中にはガラス状態にある固体物質が無数に存在するが、その熱物性は今だに理解されておらず、物性物理学における長年の課題となっている。特に低い温度域では、分子振動の非調和性が重要であると考えられてきた。この状況の中、近年の研究によって、ガラスには空間的に局在した分子振動が存在することが明らかになり、この局在振動こそがガラス特有の熱物性を理解するための鍵になると期待がもたれている。本研究は計算機シミュレーションを用いて、局在振動モードの非調和性を明らかにすることによって、長年の未解決問題である「ガラスの特異な熱物性を生み出している分子振動」の正体に迫る。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

前年度は、ガラスの振動モードがフォノン様モードであれ、局在化振動モードであれ、粒子の配置換えを伴う非調和性を有することを示した。当年度は、ガラスに熱を与えたときに、このような非調和性がどのように出現するかを明らかにした。
有限温度のガラス固体の分子動力学シミュレーションを実施し、分子の熱振動運動を詳細に解析した。その結果、ガラス転移温度よりもオーダー低い温度においても、分子は再配置運動を行いながら振動することが明らかになった。すなわち、熱によって振動モードが励起されて、励起された振動モードによって分子の再配置が次々と誘発されることが分かった。本研究の結果から、ガラスの分子振動が、結晶のものとは決定的に異なることが確立された。すなわち、結晶の分子は一つの配置のまわりを振動するのに対して、ガラスの分子は配置を時々刻々と変えながら、その変化していく配置のまわりを振動することが確立された。
さらに、このようなガラス特有の非調和性が、ガラスの音波伝搬物性にどのような影響を与えるかを調べた。その結果、音波伝搬物性に対して特異な温度依存性を生み出すことが分かり、ガラス特有の熱伝導率の起源となることが分かった。
過去に実施された数多くのガラスの熱測定や中性子・光散乱実験の結果から、ガラスには結晶には無い特異な分子振動励起があることが示唆されてきたが、本研究によってその振動励起の正体を突き止めることができ、したがってガラス固体の理解を大きく発展させることができたと考える。
