| Outline of Research at the Start |
現在、雰囲気や地域らしさといった都市の質的な側面に対する関心が高まっている。しかしその全体性や複雑性ゆえに、測定や分析の方法論は確立されていない。本研究では、都市の全体的な在り方を「様相」という概念で捉え、街路空間の様相を、心理的側面と物理的側面の両方から、かつ定量的・定性的に解明する。具体的には国内10都市における代表的ルートの全方位映像を被験者に示し、印象を話してもらうことで心理的様相に関するデータを取得し、そのルート周辺の建物や交通量を測定することで物理的様相を知る。そしてこれらを分析することで、都市の様相を総合的に明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We established a methodology to understand the unique modality (atmosphere and appearance) of various cities by focusing on street space, and conducted actual analysis in 20 cities in Japan. We were able to visualize the mixture of street widths and orientations using the concept of "street composition" and visualize it in a quantitative way. We also developed a method of experimentation in which representative streets were selected from a wide area in each city, and omnidirectional images taken there were presented to subjects to investigate what they perceive.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
都市の様相（雰囲気や佇まい）は、都市の全体性や複雑性に深く関わる漠然とした概念である。このような性質ゆえに、都市の様相はそのデザインをすることが非常に難しいばかりか、客観的に測定・分析する方法さえ確立されていない。本研究では街路空間、特にその幅員や方位などの構成に着目することで、都市の様相を定量的に可視化することができるようになった。居心地のよい都市のデザインに、街路の視点からアプローチするための、重要な基礎研究となる。
